“Black Cat Bone” (acoustic guitar blues)

Posted by on May.07, 2012, under General Comments Off

Originally recorded by Hop Wilson in about 1940, “Black Cat Bone” has become something of an acoustic and electric blues classic. There are a few nontraditional lyrics in this version. Hop’s version and various others can also be found on YouTube. I’m unaware of any copyright; if there is any copyright on this song and the holder would like the song removed, of course I will do so. A black cat bone was a charm which gave its owner powers over a significant (or maybe insignificant) other. For instance, it could cause endless frustration, as when a gent tries to make his girlfriend happy, but everything he does is wrong; it could make him incapable of loving other women, etc. Such charms could sometimes be defeated by tying a “Mercury dime” (a pre-FDR dime, with the face of Athena on it) around your ankle, or making a red ink out of the root of a plant called “dragon’s blood” and using it to write your lover’s name nine times on a piece of parchment.

It’s even more interesting when you consider that Doc (like other great masters such as Gary Davis, Broonzy,Hopkins) used just one finger on his picking hand to achieve these results. I hope you enjoy it – come back again! The full range of lessons available show how to play blues guitar in various styles, such as delta blues (Robert Johnson), Texas blues (Lightnin’ Hopkins), Chicago swing blues (Big Bill
